‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 spoilers: Amelia’s surprising connection … but with who?

It is not going to take the character of Amelia very long at all on “Grey’s Anatomy” season 11 to feel like a major part of the show. With that being said, there may still be a few surprises when it comes to just who she ends up having a bond with.

As showrunner Shonda Rhimes says to Entertainment Weekly in a new interview, it is actually a man played by James Pickens Jr. that she has a closer connection with than almost anyone else:

“There’s a moment early on when she finds herself the keeper of some secrets that Richard didn’t necessarily want her to know by being at an AA meeting that he didn’t know she was at … It draws her into the world in a deeper way than she anticipated.”

This could at least be an interesting way for her to feel connected to some others in the hospital, even if she never assumed it to be in a way like this given that she is coming in as someone close to Derek (Patrick Dempsey) first and foremost.

We wondered for a long time if the show was adding Caterina Scorsone so that Meredith would find a new friend quickly in the wake of Cristina’s exit, but it doesn’t sound like that will be the case. Instead, Rhimes is planning to firmly fill that void with anyone. Hopefully, Meredith and Amelia will get along, but the relationship will be in the end somewhat different.
