‘Outlander’ season 2 official; Starz renews drama after only one episode

In true Starz fashion, the network is wasting no time making it clear that “Outlander” is here to stay.

In an official statement today, the network’s CEO Chris Albrecht was happy to confirm that after great reviews and a big response among multiple platforms, there will be another 13 episodes ordered next year based on the next book in Diana Gabaldon’s series. Take a look below:

“The overwhelming support Outlander has received from the fans, viewers and critics made the decision for us to go ahead with the second book a very easy one … With an incredible artist such as Ronald D. Moore at the helm and a cast as spectacular as this, we look forward to continue this spell-binding journey with Claire, Jamie, Frank, Brianna, Roger and everybody over the centuries.”

We’ve said it already that we feel like this show may be for the network what “Dexter” ultimately was for Showtime, a series that really bent expectations for what the network could be, and something with potential to get “runaway hit” status. There are not a whole lot of shows out there that can qualify for this.

Starz does have a sterling reputation of renewing shows for another season early, so we were not exactly worried about this announcement coming out. They really like to give their programs a chance to grow and develop, and typically the second season is when they really have to worry about a possible cancellation. Just look at what happened to “Boss” and “Magic City” for some examples of that. This show still has a good shot.
