‘America’s Got Talent’ review: Meet Jaycob Curlee, Dustin’s Dojo, Blue Journey, Mighty Atom Jr.
Watching “America’s Got Talent” at this point is such a mixed bag, since you really have to reconcile what we love about the show with all the things we hate (the product placement, the canned lines, and the fact that the show hypes up the winners as superstars even when few of them are).
Now, we turn to the good: The acts! There were many good ones tonight, and it proved yet again that despite the notion of a smaller talent pool, there are still cool, innovative things out there. We’ve ranked some of our favorite auditions tonight below, and of course we want to hear some of your own thoughts in the comments!
Honorable Mention – Nick Cannon’s mime prank. It wasn’t so much an act as an excuse to laugh like a crazy person. We never saw it coming that he was a mime in disguise!
8. Acte II – The only reson that we found this opera duo appealing was because of the edit. When they started saying that they could see themselves with Beyonce, how much were you rolling your eyes and thinking they would be awful?
7. Adrian Romoff – Musically, there is nothing about this kid that you could not see at a talent show at your local middle school. This was a great personality find, since it’s a nine-year old child genius who is already in the eighth grade and knows he is super-intelligent.
6. Dan Naturman – It’s interesting that there is a great comic on this show with “Last Comic Standing” back, but we understand the appeal here. It’s easier for comics to go far with good material on this show, especially since you have so many amateurs who pop up with zero experience thinking that they can get by.
5. Mighty Atom, Jr. – By far, this is one of the coolest things that we have ever seen. It’s a 93-year old man using his teeth to pull a car. It’s an impressive feat even if you were a young guy, which differentiates this from some of the kid singers who get favoritism because of their age.
4.Rokardy – As a Cirque du Soleil expert, this guy knows what he is doing. Hand-balancing is his bread and butter, and we are certainly going to see more of it as time goes on from him.
3. Jaycob Curlee – He isn’t the best singer that we’ve ever heard, but there is something about him and his story is so likable that it didn’t bother us that the show milked it … too much. We want to see him develop some confidence, though, if he wants to be a serious contender.
2. Dustin’s Dojo – This was like something straight out of “Napoleon Dynamite.” You had two schmucks up there doing a funny, bizarre routine featuring fake karate, and we actually loved it! The problem is that it may have been better as one of those Kyle Mooney shorts from “Saturday Night Live,” and as much as we absolutely loved it and were mesmerized by it, is there anything that you can do with it now?
1. Blue Journey – Mad props to these two for refusing to telling the kidges in advance how long they have known each other, knowing that this would changed expectations. This looks all the more impressive now that they know how long the two have been working together. Also, this was the most Kenichi Ebina-esque performance on the night.

Blue Journey were magnificent! Dustin’s Dojo is hilarious! Heidi Klum and Mel B are useless as “judges”. Dustin’s Dojo has a cult following already and I hope and expect him and Terry to do TV and a movie soon. If Blue Journey can equal their audition they will go far, whether they win AGT or not. The roar of delight at the end of their performance said more than words could. Their act was literally enchanting.
