‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5 spoilers: Ian Somerhalder on Damon, Elena’s push-and-pull

Damon -When “The Vampire Diaries” returns to the air on Thursday night, what can you expect to see from Damon and Elena? If you guessed “more of the same,” then you are probably pretty close to correct. This relationship will continue to be all sorts of crazy-complicated, and it will always probably be that way. No matter how much each person may want to move on, there will continue to be something that holds them back.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview, Ian Somerhalder did his part to explain just how the push-and-pull between these two characters is inevitable, and probably going to be present for the rest of the entire season:

“It’s always been that way with Elena. There’s always this pushing and pulling … It really does make it a very dynamic component to their relationship that creates tension, chemistry. It’s pretty evident and it’s there to stay for a while. It’s always uncomfortable. It’s like someone running your hands on a chalkboard sometimes.”

Eventually, we feel like things are going to stabilize for Damon and Elena … but not until at least the end of the season or heck, the entire series. This show is more interesting when there is conflict, and it’s been some time since it felt like Elena was actually in a committed relationship. There are times when you want to just see her with someone normal, stable, and happy, but then you remember the chemistry and the history there and want her to be with Damon again. In that sense, we are in the same position that she is in as fans of the show, watching her routinely go back after saying that she wants to pull away.
