NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5 spoilers: First look at ‘G.I. Joe’ tribute
First of all, the primary reason worth celebrating this episode is that it is a tribute of sorts to the old “G.I. Joe” cartoon of the 1980s. Admittedly, this is not something that reverberates with us the same way that their spoofs of “Doctor Who” (a.k.a. Inspector Spacetime) or “Dungeons & Dragons” do, but if you loved the old adventures of the soldier as a kid, you’re probably going to love this.
You can take a quick look at a number of the characters in cartoon form below (via Entertainment Weekly), and executive producer Chris McKenna also has the following to say about the overall story:
“[G.I. Joe] was something from our childhood that was very important to us and we had fond memories of it, and we thought it would be a cool way to do another animated episode … Like all Community episodes, it takes on a certain style. This one has a very specific story reason for it. I don’t want to give too much away, but our characters find themselves on a Wizard of Oz-type journey through the world of G.I. Joe. … There’s a mystery that Jeff in particular has to get to the bottom of.”
Despite its style of animation or the show that it is providing a take on, it is still fair to say that this is actually much more than your standard “G.I. Joe” story. McKenna claims that this is actually going to be a very important “Community” episode to the show’s story, which will hopefully place this along a similar line to when they have done great things with animation in the past. (The video game episode with Giancarlo Esposito is a personal favorite.)
