‘The Walking Dead’ season 4 finally finds itself a worthy adversary: The Oscars
There has been no greater ratings monster over the years then “The Walking Dead.” It is a show so dominant in the 18-49 demographic, not even the winter Olympics could slow it down enough to make a huge impact.
However, we have at least now discovered that there is something out there capable of being #1 on Sunday night other than it, and it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone at all: The Oscars. The 2014 Academy Awards drew, at least in the main hours of primetime, a 12.1 rating in the key demo along with over 40 million viewers. These are similar numbers to the 2013 show, so there was never any doubt that this was the week that the zombies were going to fall.
Still, AMC has to be pretty happy about the show scoring a 6.4 rating and over 12 million viewers. While these may be the show’s lowest ratings of 2014, it is still a better demo figure than any other scripted series has drawn all year. For that to be coming on cable, and against one of the most-watched events of the entire year, is pretty darn impressive.
Do we expect the numbers for the show to increase next week? You better believe it, given that this will be the first time since the premiere that the show will not have to air against some sort of substantial event. With that being said, we don’t expect the show to get anywhere over an 8.0 in the demo again until the finale, which will air near the end of this month. Premieres and finales are when the audience figures for the show tend to surge.
