TV quick hits: ‘Odd Couple’ remake, a ‘Person of Interest’ alum, and more pilot news
This edition of CarterMatt TV quick hits is going to be all about pilot season, since there are a ton of assorted headlines out there on the subject that are worth keeping track of.
“Odd Couple” remake – We’ll start with the big news that the proposed remake of “The Odd Couple” featuring Matthew Perry as Oscar has been ordered to pilot. That doesn’t necessarily mean that this is going to end up having a show, but it is a step in the right direction. Felix has yet to be cast, but even without that, it still feels like this is a favorite for CBS. This is Perry’s first attempt since “Friends” at something multi-camera, and that plus the show’s history should be enough to drum up a little bit of interest for a network that has the challenge ahead of replacing “How I Met Your Mother.”
Viola Davis scores big role – One of Davis’ co-stars of “The Help” in Octacia Spencer has been all over pilot season, but Davis has now been cast in the ABC pilot from Shonda Rhimes (“Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy”) entitled “How To Get Away with Murder.” She will play the part of a brilliant professor who ends up becoming involved in a shocking and complicated murder plot.
Ben Feldman – The “Mad Men” alum (Ginsberg) has just signed up to play the male lead on “A to Z,” the NBC comedy pilot that also features “How I Met Your Mother” star Cristin Milioti as a part of a couple whose lives are chronicled from start to finish. Feldman will, naturally, play the other half. Thanks to “Mad Men” filming its final season, some of its actors are going to slowly start to make their way into pilot season.
“Fargo” news – While FX’s limited series “Fargo” premiering on April 15 is not necessarily a pilot, we still thought you would like to know that the brilliant Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele will venture over from the comedy sketch world to play FBI partners for a four-episode arc.
-Also, “Person of Interest” alum Taraji P. Henson has joined “Empire,” a new hip-hop drama for Fox from Lee Daniels.
