‘Mad Men’ season 7: January Jones and the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ poster debate

Betty -Is the poster for the upcoming “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie a little too similar to some of the promotional artwork for “Mad Men“? This is something that has waged debate ever since the movie’s poster was first unveiled, so it is not like the comments recently by January Jones on Instagram have really sparked up a brand-new dialogue.

However, it is so much more interesting now when some of the show’s cast actually acknowledges the similarity, no? You can see Jones’ post containing the image of Christian Grey (played by Dorman) in the image below; here was the caption that she attached to it:

“Does this look familiar to anyone else?#madmenpostercirca2010”

Mad Men -The poster that Jones is referencing is seemingly this one, which does contain a good bit of the same sort of imagery. You have a man staring out at a skyline, with his back mostly turned to the camera. You also have a similar sort of color scheme and contrast from one to the other.

For the record, we don’t actually think that there is any sort of conspiracy going on here, and that “Mad Men” was the inspiration for the other poster. It is much more likely a mere (and unfortunate) coincidence, since the “Fifty Shades of Grey” marketing team was obviously hoping for the same sort of mixture of power, loneliness, mystery, and the sort of darkness and light that is presented with Don Draper. The biggest difference between the two? The telephone, which is largely used in “Mad Men” as a sign of the times.
