Ratings: Is ‘Almost Human’ closer, or farther away to renewal?

There are so many interesting ratings stories already, but at the moment the one that we are watching closer than almost any other is what the fate could be for “Almost Human.” This is a show that originally looked like it may not make it to a season 2, but the tide has started to turn here.

What’s the evidence? Let’s map it out this way. “The Following” has been a disappointment this year, and with it shedding an audience, it may be trending in the wrong direction. Meanwhile, “Almost Human” is proving to be somewhat consistent; a 1.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic for a Monday airing is not great, but remember that the show is airing against the Olympics. Also, “Bones” on Monday has at times drawn numbers that are barely above this.

Also, just look at the rest of Fox’s programming slate moving forward. Without “The X Factor,” they have three hours to fill in the fall. Also, “Enlisted” and “Raising Hope” are almost surely to be canceled, “The Following” could go, and while “Glee” is renewed, they may try to bury it in a bad timeslot rather than airing it out in a big way. That’s a lot of things working in this show’s favor to come back for at least another 13 episodes. That’s not an enormous commitment compared to 22 episodes, and the show could build an audience organically like it has throughout season 1. Time will tell, but our interest is piqued.
