‘Almost Human’ season 1, episode 10 review: John Kennex and those little red pills
When we first started watching “Almost Human” we weren’t completely sold. The main character of John Kennex was a cop we’d seen many times over on numerous cop shows, but once Dorian was introduced, we saw different layers of John and everything started to fall into place. Tonight we had a chance to learn even more about him.
This week’s episode brought us a few more elements about Ana. John has a dream about her and it’s affecting him in a big bad way. So bad that we actually see him taking those little red pills again… the ones he was taking at the beginning of the series, but hasn’t since Dorian became his partner. Once Dorian figures out that John is taking those pills, Kennex assures him that the pills are helping him “un-cluster” his mind so he can remember more about the ambush and that he has everything under control. Does John really have it under control? Not really considering that he almost killed Dorian and himself in a car accident while having a flashback to the day the ambush happened.
Captian Maldonado is also concerned about the flashbacks and tells him that if he obsesses about revenge that it will affect everything and now that he’s remembering more they are going to have to talk to internal affairs again. Officer Reynolds is called in to talk to John about the flashes, but it really seems like more of an interrogation.
John goes back to the “recollectionist” asking to go back into the chair again (something we haven’t seen for a while either). He remembers Ana giving him “something small” a Matryoshka doll (a wooden doll that has many other little dolls in it). He pulls them all apart but finds nothing. Does this have a deeper meaning and will John find it? Yup, he finds out that it’s a listening device and that someone’s been spying on him.
After last week’s awesome episode bringing us back into the Insyndicate and the main story we weren’t that crazy to get another “story of the week” about rich kids dealing drugs – this story has been played out on other cops shows over the years. We were excited to see a little bit more when it comes to John’s memories about the ambush, but at the same time…. not enough Dorian for our liking. We are also wondering if this was an earlier episode that was maybe aired out of order since it seemed a little strange to see John back taking pills when it hasn’t been mentioned for weeks now. Grade: C+
