Ratings: Has ‘American Idol XIII’ leveled off; is ‘The Tomorrow People’ in trouble?
This is the time of year where you really start to see where the rubber hits the road when it comes to some of the shows on the schedule, and with that in mind today, we have to start with whether or not “American Idol” is actually turning things around in season 13 after last year’s terrible season that everyone wants to forget about.
While things could still change based on the quality of the contestants in the live rounds, the divide between the ratings for this season and where we were last year is starting to decrease. It was huge looking at the premiere versus the one in 2013 with Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, but Wednesday night’s new episode only lagged 0.7 behind a comparable season 12 show. That’s a nice improvement, and by the end of the season, it would not surprise us at all if the viewing figures were just about even.
While there are still some problems with the show (and we go into them in our most-recent episode review), what “American Idol” is managing to do right at the moment is putting most of the focus on the contestants, and not allowing the judges to just completely take over everything like they otherwise could.
In some other pressing ratings news, the new episode of “The Tomorrow People” may have helped to further cement that there will be no tomorrow for this show. With just a 0.5 rating, especially after a sure hit in “Arrow,” we imagine that this will be a casualty that goes before even “Hart of Dixie” and “Reign” later this year. Right now, it and “Beauty and the Beast” are the two shows on the network in most need of a lifeline.
The only other notables at the moment from this are that “Criminal Minds” saw a bump up to a 2.8 for its landmark 200th episode, while “Modern Family” (with a 3.5) actually is lower than what “How I Met Your Mother” got in its final figures for Monday. Part of the reason for that increased audience for the latter, though, is probably just due to it being near the end.
