‘Days of Our Lives’ renewed, will stay on NBC through 2016

While soaps have a tendency to stay on the air for a much longer time than almost any other show, what does still make this remarkable is that we’re living in an era where so many are convinced that the daytime drama is as a genre dying. There are fewer people home during the day, and there are so many more options than there were back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when these shows dominated the airwaves and the ratings.
One thing that has probably helped them now? The prevalence of the DVR in the homes of many. Let’s say, for example, that you are unemployed for a while, you get hooked on the show, and then you find a job. Don’t you think that you are going to keep up with the show for at least a little while? We feel like it. This has helped the series stay at least somewhat relevant in the internet age, and NBC will remain a player now in daytime for at least a couple more years. ABC only has “General Hospital” left, while CBS has remained committed to both “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless.”
