‘Justified’ season 5, episode 2 review: Things become messy for Boyd

This season of “Justified” started out fairly strong, with a few questionable moves. We saw Raylan avoiding going to see his daughter (which seemed out of character), Boyd seriously injure a man and leave a witness behind (Boyd has always been way smarter then that) and the introduction to the leader of the Crowe family in Darryl Crowe Jr. (who has the potential to be a really great villain.)

This week we get to see the fallout from Boyd leaving a witness behind as Paxton’s wife tells the creepiest police officer of all time that it was Boyd who beat her husband within a inch of his life. However, when they bring her face to face with Boyd she tells the cops that he’s the wrong man.

So why did she do this? Well her husband (a man of power) will never be the same again due to the fact that he’s going to spend the rest of his life in a vegetative state and she wants help from Boyd in the form of 300,000 so she can go home. Boyd offers to kill Paxton so she can get his money, but she reveals she signed a prenup so she wants the cash from Boyd and she’ll leave quietly. Unfortunately she is also getting pressure from the creepy cop to turn Boyd over.

What no one saw coming was Paxton waking up out of his coma. This is not Boyd’s only problem as his last shipment from the Canadians got hit and he’s without product once again.

Raylan’s story this episode was all about helping Loretta and romancing a cute, blonde social worker and we wondered where Darryl Crowe Jr. was since he is infinitely more interesting. He showed up at Dewey’s bar right at the end ready to get business rolling in Kentucky.

Over all it wasn’t the strongest episode and we are hoping that the Loretta story is actually going to tie into Darryl Crowe Jr. in some way otherwise we’re not really sure what the purpose was. Are they running out of material for Raylan? Grade: C –
