NBC’s ‘The Voice’ finale: Tessanne Chin’s winner’s single ‘Tumbling Down’ by Ryan Tedder
At the end of Tuesday night’s “The Voice,” we learned that Tessanne Chin was the champion of season 5. But after that, we also had an opportunity to hear what the first-ever winner’s single was going to be.
The show hired Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic to write the track, and he had the really tough task of having to pen a somewhat generic song not knowing who it would be for. That song is entitled “Tumbling Down,” and it was a pretty powerful, soulful pop number that was about romance and heartache. It was therefore pretty universal, and any singer could have related to it.
Did Tessanne do a good job with the number? Definitely, but we feel like there is so much more to crack with this song than what we saw here. You have to remember that Tessanne was performing the track while holding back tears, and she really just wanted to be hugging her family. This is what happens when you make someone perform after finding out they win something: It’s hard!
But Tedder’s work with Tessanne is not over, as he is also going to be helping her in the early part of her career. Plus, Tessanne is going to get some promotion on the Rose Parade New Year’s Day, and following that up, work will start quickly on a debut album. When you’re in the world of music, there are not many opportunities for you to stop and catch a breath. “The Voice” has shown a better ability to produce stars as of late, especially when it comes to Danielle Bradbery and Cassadee Pope.

The song is lackluster and not worthy of Tessane’s voice. What they need is a good song. We have too many great voices but not enough good songs.
