‘The Sing-Off’ preview: The ‘My Generation’ theme could damage one team
Monday night marks the return of “The Sing-Off,” but at a slightly different time than you saw it on the air last week. Thanks to “The Voice” being back in its two-hour format, the show will shift back to 10:00 p.m. Eastern, and will feature performances all set to the theme of My Generation.
In theory, this could be a really great idea for a performance show to bring in an even greater touch of nostalgia. Plus, the energy and creativity that some of these groups have helps to really differentiate these songs from the original. It’s not like you’re just going to the bar and hearing everyone sing karaoke.
But, there is one problem in particular with one of the groups coming out and performing a song from the 1980s: They weren’t born then. That’s right: We’re talking about Vocal Rush, and we definitely understand if you feel old right about now. They probably have the hardest task in tapping into that nostalgia, but with a song like “Hero” the most important thing is probably just to make it as fun and dramatic as humanly possible.
Like with the episode on Thursday night, there are only four groups performing Monday in Vocal Rush, Element, Home Free, and VoicePlay. Two of those groups will descend all the way down to the Ultimate Sing-Off, where they will then battle for their lives. We haven’t really loved the fights the last two episodes, and that’s a bit of a bummer given that the first Ultimate Sing-Off was one of the more incredible things that we’ve seen on a singing show. Maybe it was in part that the episode was so new that it felt fresh. Or, it could just be that the other singers fighting for it since were just a little too nervous.
