‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 9, episode 9 review: Who just met the Mother?

Get ready -

After getting a whole season of “How I Met Your Mother” that was all about the planning of Barney and Robin’s wedding, tonight had an episode in “Platonish” that on the surface, felt like a recap episode. We heard words about “awful” and “boring,” along with some of the obligatory comments all about how the show really should have ended many months ago.

Well, it turns out that the writers still had a few tricks up its sleeve, including one that is very much a debate. Barney, as it turns out, actually met the Mother months ago right before he figured out the “play” that he was going to use to get Robin to marry him. They had a nice conversation and apparently, she had quite an impact on him. So why not show us this? Obviously, it would have been the writers tipping their cap. The other reason why we haven’t heard about this is simply that Barney would have never mentioned it to anyone for a long time out of pride. He only decided to tell the story right before the wedding.

So in the end, most of the silliness that we had in the episode worked out, and the appearances from both Washington Generals and Bryan Cranston as Hammond Druthers really paid off. This was at least a funny episode, and we don’t think there was anything in it that really messed up the mythology. The only negative for Ted is that it reinforced yet again the affection that he had for Robin, and the sadness that he was still experiencing now that he was going through the entire wedding weekend while watching Robin with his best friend. Little does he know that the woman he really is destined for is going to be at the same ceremony.

But outside of these few things, nothing else happened. It’s hard to give an episode that we so uneventful save for maybe two things anything other than a decent grade. Grade: B-.
