‘The X Factor’ UK preview: See Hannah Barrett’s emotional audition (video)
Before we get too deep into this preview for tomorrow night’s “X Factor” UK episode, let’s start by asking this: What is it with this show specifically over-using the Emili Sande hit “Read All About It”? It’s almost becoming the “I Have Nothing” over on British singing competitions, and we’re a few instances away from banning it outright. It’s a good song, but you start to hear it sung so much that it loses some of its meaning.
For whatever amount of heart that the song has left in it as a singing-competition cover track, Hannah Barrett does a pretty admirable job of performing it in the video below. What she brings to her audition is some soul, a great voice that could clearly fill a massive room, and also some emotion that you can hear through her inflection. Her enunciation is a little similar to Adele, though she is far still from being on that level.
From what we can tell here, what Hannah needs to work on is trying to fill the stage with her personality. She seems in her own little world as she sings, which may be great for her; however, it’s not great for people watching at home or paying to see you in concert. Regardless of however hard it may be, it’s imperative that you find a way to open yourself up.
As for this audition room structure, we wish it was a bit more akin to “American Idol,” where the contestants all sing a capella rather than being assisted by some sort of backing track. We could really do without that, since we just want to hear a voice and nothing else.
