‘Modern Family’ season 5: Julie Bowen talks show tackling same-sex marriage issue
Thanks to all of the changes in the same-sex marriage laws in California, it really only made sense for “Modern Family” to take this subject on with Cam and Mitchell sooner rather than later. Luckily, it appears that the writers are wasting no time at all in addressing the subject (which is of course a very important one in many American homes), and it will be a part of the show’s season 5 premiere on Wednesday, September 25.
So what does Julie Bowen have to say about it? Speaking to E! News, the actress behind Claire actually takes the opportunity to praise “Glee” for the way that they have tackled emotional topics at times while also using humor, and she hopes that her show can manage to ultimately do something similar.
“We address gay marriage. We address it. I so admire Ryan Murphy and Glee and how they’ve taken a musical and a comedy, but they also really deliver very serious messages. We’re still like 10 steps behind that. I don’ t know if we’ll ever be there.”
With that being said, Bowen says that she likes the way that “Modern Family” takes on the gay marriage issue, and says that there is plenty of humor that happens as a result of the subject coming up, and it comes from all perspectives. This is clearly something that Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s characters are going to have on their minds, but how much it manifests itself beyond this episode is to be seen.
Do you think it’s time for “Modern Family” to have a Cam / Mitchell wedding, and how do you think they should handle what is clearly going to be a sensitive topic? Be sure to share your thoughts below! In case you have not seen it yet, click here to watch the first teaser for the new season.
