‘New Girl’ season 3 spoilers: Zooey Deschanel’s Jess also has a sister!

Why hasn’t Jessica Day’s sister turned up before now on “New Girl”? It’s one of the many mysteries that happens in the world of comedies, where you often either save guest stars for down the road, or you come up with new family members to show off an effort to make things exciting. Take, for example, how we still have not met most of Schmidt’s family, and how Winston is more or less an enigma at this point.

However, TV Guide reports that Jess’ sister is going to be included on an upcoming season 3 episode, and there is of course one “go figure” question that most people are probably asking: Why not just cast Emily in the part? They clearly look like siblings (because, well, they are), she’s also an actress, and she stars on another series airing on the same network.

Unfortunately, as executive producer Liz Meriwether tells the website, there’s going to be a problem in here when it comes to how busy Emily’s schedule on “Bones” (plus being a mom):

“I have a feeling that Emily has a pretty busy schedule with Bones, [but] I’m excited to cast the sister; I think it’ll be really fun.”

This character won’t be turning up right away on the series, so it may be a few weeks before we hear anything more about it. Given that Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner are both Jess’ parents, we imagine that the show will also dip into nostalgia a little bit with this casting, as well, rather than trying to book some sort of “new hot” name for the part. (They save that for when people get married, a la with Taylor Swift last spring.)
