The Pitt season 2: Shawn Hatosy on possible night shift spin-off

We have now made it to the part of The Pitt season 2 where we are getting to see some people who are a part of the night shift — led of course by Shawn Hatosy as Dr. Jack Abbot. Even though the Animal Kingdom alum only shows up in a percentage of the season the character has become a fan favorite — heck, he’s even got an Emmy to his name now.

So is there a chance that the night shift eventually becomes its own series? A lot of people do clearly want that, but making it happen is an entirely different beast altogether.

For now, let’s just say that this is something that Hatosy is open to. Speaking to People Magazine, the actor had the following to say:

“There’s been a lot of talk about the night shift. That would be really cool. We could do some cool, interesting things with the tone of the show … Dr. Abbot chose the night shift because it’s a certain kind of group of misfits that work together at night.”

We do tend to believe that the idea is being at least discussed on some level, but there may be one big reason it never happens: How much of The Pitt is too much? We could see a real concern coming out about it becoming overwhelming in terms of how much content you got in a given year.

If there was a way to make things work here, we’d honestly look at shortening the main series to fourteen episodes, and then doing ten episodes of the spin-off so that you could get a full 24-hour day at the hospital. Then again, you could just twelve each, but given that viewers are invested with the Noah Wyle original at this point, we’re not sure how much interest there would be in cutting it back.
