Shrinking season 3 episode 11 (finale): Is a cliffhanger coming?

As so many of you are more than likely aware at this point, Shrinking season 3 episode 11 is going to be coming to Apple TV next week — and also, it’s the finale. There is so much great stuff coming for the cast and crew, but we also wonder the following: Will there be closure? Originally the first three seasons were planned as a continuous arc, so there could be a part of the story that feels like a series finale.

What we are seeing in the story at the moment clearly backs that up. We are at a point here where Paul could be leaving and Alice is heading off to college. If the show wanted to end itself here, they could — but we know that a season 4 is coming.

When it comes to this great Shrinking dilemma, we really think that everything comes down to one simple thing: When the producers decided that they wanted to keep Jimmy’s story going. If it was after season 3 was written, then there may not be a big cliffhanger here. However, if they figured this out before production was wrapped, we could at least see something.

This is not necessarily a show that needs a cliffhanger, as we have seen them find some really creative and interesting ways to close seasons in the past. (We still think about all the emotions wrapped into the end of season 1.) Yet, if there is an idea that the writers wanted to go with, we welcome it — take Jimmy trying to figure out the kind of therapist he wants to be moving forward, or Paul debating if he wants to actually leave the West Coast, after all. The stakes on this show aren’t that big compared to a lot of other series, but there are still ways to hit us right in the feels.
