Marshals premiere: Luke Grimes on Monica Dutton’s death

Marshals season 1

Even before the Marshals premiere arrived on CBS last night, we knew that the odds were high that Monica Dutton would be killed off. Kelsey Asbille was never announced as a part of the cast, and the trailers strongly alluded to the fact that the character could be killed off-screen.

So now, the show moves forward with Kayce as a widower. We have learned that the move to kill off Monica had to do in part to the actress’ lack of availability to appear in the project. It would be rather hard to have a show where the character is alive but off-screen — and with that, we are where we are now.

Speaking to TV Insider, Luke Grimes described his process of having to tell his former co-star that her character would be killed off:

“I was heartbroken for myself and for [Kelsey]. It felt like, ‘I don’t even know what that would look like doing it without her, what that would feel like.’ Kelsey’s become one of my best friends. She’s the coolest actor I’ve ever worked with. She’s down to earth, sweet, and kind to every other actor and the crew.

“… I worked up the courage to call. I didn’t know how she was going to feel about it. I had to see how she was doing. We had a great conversation. In true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood. She’s going to do just fine. She is so talented, gorgeous, and awesome. She’s going to work. That’s not an issue.”

We know that Kelsey has booked a number of other roles since wrapping Yellowstone and with that, she is going to be just fine. would we welcome Monica in a flashback or dream sequence? Absolutely, but there is no indication that is about to happen.
