There is no denying that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode 6 this weekend could be packed with all sorts of content. How can it not be? We are talking here about the finale and with that, a story where almost anything and everything could happen. At this point, our advice is rather simple: Just do your best to be prepared in the wake of Baelor’s death.

Ultimately, this passing is one that has massive repercussions through the remainder of the series and Westeros history, as the man was the Hand of the King and next in line for the Iron Throne. Baelor died protecting Ser Duncan at the Trial of Seven, fighting even against his own brother Maekar in the end.

So how is Maekar going to handle this loss, especially given that he is directly responsible for Baelor’s death? Let’s just say it is complicated. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, here is at least some of what Sam Spruell had to say on the subject:

“We did slightly different versions of culpability, I guess; whether it was accident or whether he meant to kill his brother … I think that was really exciting for me to experiment with and to discuss with not only Ira, but Sarah [Adina Smith, director of episode 6]. There is that kind of deep, deep desire to be number one in Maekar that might be realized by the death of his brother. So all the guilt or all the sadness or all the grief he feels is kind of bracketed by this realization that this means he’s next in line to the throne.”

Ultimately, Maekar is certainly a flawed person — while he may not be as nefarious as his son Aerion, he also chose to fight alongside him knowing full well his true nature. This could throw a lot of wrinkles into not just the finale, but also season 2.
