Call the Midwife season 15 episode 6: Is Nonnatus House shut down?

We had a feeling that Call the Midwife season 15 episode 6 was going to be dramatic — and yet, did you see that ending coming?

At the end of tonight’s hour, the Order at Nonnatus House received official word that the maternity home was going to be coming to an end. Dr. Turner was warned about that a little bit earlier in the episode about it, and all the Sisters now have to brace for the possibility that the council will not give them any further funds. Everyone now faces the possibility that their practice could be coming to a close amidst reminders that they were always “outliers” in a period of time that is rapidly changing.

In past seasons of the BBC One hit, it has been quite easy to look at this situation and say that it is nowhere near as dramatic as it may seem on the surface, and everything will shake itself out in the end. We’re not so sure that is the case now. Remember that in between the NHS and a greater amount of hospital births, the institution at the heart of the show could very well go away. Add to this the fact that Call the Midwife as a show will be changing radically after this season. There is going to be a hiatus of sorts as writer Heidi Thomas temporarily looks back to the past.

In summation, all of this really just makes us think that very little is ever going to be the same, and that the remainder of the season will be both heartfelt, nostalgic, and full of some sort of closure — even if that does not mean we are saying goodbye to these characters forever.
