If you have loved Dermot Mulroney on Chicago Fire over the past season and a half, we have some news that absolutely may feel bittersweet.

So where do we start? Well, according to a report from Deadline, the actor will be going on a hiatus from the show a little later this season, on the other side of the big crossover event and a subsequent episode coming in March. This is a break from playing Dom Pascal that is being written into the story, and it remains to be seen whether or not he is going to return for the finale.

As for the reason for the hiatus, there is not a lot of specific insight out there — however, we know that a lot of series regulars these days are only in a percentage of the episodes as a cost-cutting measure. Mulroney is also extremely busy given that The Hunting Wives, which he also appears in, is filming at the same time. To make matters even more chaotic, that is a show that is in production in a different part of the country.

While Mulroney is gone…

The aforementioned site notes that Rob Morgan is going to recur as Battalion Chief Hopkins, someone “who has a long, haunted past in overseeing several Chicago firehouses and is quick to assert authority over his colleagues.” Could this mean there is tension with him around the other characters? There is certainly a possibility of that happening, but we know that tension in the post-Boden era is absolutely something that the producers are going to strive for.

Just in case you needed a reminder, there is more Chicago Fire coming next week — just be prepared for a little bit of a break during parts of February due to the Olympics.
