Pluribus season 1 episode 8: The big Carol, Zosia moment

Given that Pluribus season 1 episode 8 is the penultimate one of the series, it made sense for there to be some big moments. While we would not answer that there were definite answers per se as to whether or not the Joined can be stopped, we did get a great deal of ambiguity for Carol and Zosia both.
Let’s start off with the kiss, one that Zosia herself initiated. For a group in the Joined who seem to respond to commands more so than anything else, it was a surprise that she was able to do this, not knowing if it would be reciprocated. Could they read enough into Carol’s behavior? Or, was there a certain amount of the real Zosia that poked through? We do think that we were also left to wonder that during some of the scenes where Zosia referred to herself in the first person. That was something clearly Carol wanted, and you can argue that this was a manipulation from the Joined to please her. Or, was it?

We do leave this episode thinking that Carol may actually be more committed to a relationship with Zosia / the Joined than she ever was before, and that she is actually getting something now out of this life. The problem here is that Joined clearly still has other plans. We know they want to bring her on board but beyond that, they also seemingly want to broadcast themselves to other aliens across the universe. Isn’t that a reminder of their own brand of conquest?
A lot of this stuff, in the end, does leave room for some major discussion about the future — and that is without even getting into Manousos’ impending arrival to Albuquerque. Zosia knows that he is coming, and it was made clear in episode 8 that even after a life-threatening injury, he still does not want any help from anyone.
