‘Teen Wolf’ season 3, episode 5 review: A bus straight to the past
We always appreciate seeing a scripted show try to break from their form a little bit with a new episode, and with that in mind, we found much of what we saw on Monday night’s “Teen Wolf” somewhat refreshing. We had a story told via flashbacks, as we saw our characters having to rehash everything that unfolded with them while on the way to a cross-country event of all places.
It is part of the dichotomy here that likely makes many people enjoy this series so much in the first place. On one side of the coin, you have this world that is stuffed full of danger; and then, it is right back to school and trying to deal with being an everyday human being.
In some ways, the nonchalant attitude on the bus also worked to demonstrate exactly just how numb these characters have become from the vantage point of violence these days. We saw the death of alpha wolves, of all things! And yet, there was still studying to be done, and then a life to move forward with.
While there are times that we think that “Teen Wolf” becomes a little bit mired in its own mythology, this episode really had quite a bit going for it: Violence, backstory, and even something that was unique. We also had a little bit of romance … but all of that fades to black in between the epic action sequence near the end involving the Demon Wolf’s men, and then the sight of a bloody hand print on a car door in the closing minutes. Are we really making any progress here at all, or simply just watching the cycle of violence play out? It’s a little confusing still, and that is the biggest weakness with this season right now.
