‘Doctor Who’ season 8: Matt Smith lines up new play alongside ‘Sherlock’ star
It looks like the many worlds of Steven Moffat are getting ready to collide, and this time it is on the stage rather than the small screen. Just in case it wasn’t exciting in theory, we are literally going to see the geek fantasy of The Doctor from “Doctor Who” facing off against Andrew Scott’s “Sherlock” character of Moriarty, with an appearance from Helen Mirren as the Queen and Ben Whishaw as Q from the James Bond franchise to boot.
This one-off production set to hit London’s West End, per Radio Times, is entitled “The Audience,” and is a sequel to “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” This production is being staged tonight at the Apollo Theatre as a part of a way to raise money for such charities as Ambitious about Autism and The National Autistic Society. (We’re hoping that some sort of video release follows, just to see fandoms explode even further than they already will.)
Speaking in a statement, here is what director Simon Stephens had to say about this whole event:
“It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see all those people in the same story. I’m sure a lot of people have fantasised about what would happen if the Doctor did battle with Moriarty.”
This now marks what could be the second-to-last time that Smith will don his famous bowtie to play the role of The Doctor, given that the 50th Anniversary Special is already filmed. The only other chapter of his story to be told is the Christmas special, and after that a new Doctor will enter the picture. (There is no word yet on who that will be, and we do not particularly buy most of the names floating around out there.)
While there is no official trailer yet for the 50th Anniversary Special, click here anyway; we have a feeling that you will be rather happy about it after the fact.
