‘Bates Motel’ season 2 spoilers: Vera Farmiga on challenge playing Norma Bates
These past few months have been very lucrative for Vera Farmiga. The actress not only has a starring role on one of A&E’s landmark series in “Bates Motel,” but her performance has led to her receiving a pretty hefty amount of Emmy buzz in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. In turn, this has led to many interviews, and thus opportunities to kick off some speculation as to what could be coming up next on the series.
So what does Varmiga have to say about the future of one Norma Bates? You already know that the ending here is not good, and this is in many ways what makes playing the part exciting. For more, just see what the actress had to say in a new interview with Deadline on the subject:
“It’s the great American tragedy, and we know where that story inevitably leads. And it’s grisly. It’s grim. We know that Norman’s going to become some sort of version of the guy in Psycho, and that Norma’s going to become some sort of version of that skeleton with the updo, but how are we going to get there? For me to answer that question, I’d have to divulge a major plot point. It’s like Chopin. It begins and it ends with dissonances, but in between I want to strike all those beautiful chords that make the story so complex.”
Season 2 of “Bates Motel” will pick back up following the revelation that Norman has seemingly taken the life of his teacher, but there are so many more interesting wrinkles that could come along with this. How will he progress forward from here, and will some of the external struggles for Norma finally cease? Given that this is a dark and often-disturbing world, we suspect that the answer to this is “no.”
