MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 3, episodes 1 & 2 review: Jenna Hamilton vs. death, babies
If there is one thing we learned through the one-hour season 3 premiere of “Awkward” Tuesday night, it was that this may be the most underrated comedy on TV these days. It’s extremely funny, inappropriate, and by no means should its audience be limited to teens. Basically, we’re not quite sure that another show really captures the high school experience so honesty or so well.
Take, for example, what Jenna was going through during the first two episodes of the season: even though she seemingly had everything she could want, she was lost. She felt disconnected from her friends after spending a summer apart from them, especially with Tamara ignoring her and realizing that her relationship with Matty may not be completely what she needs every second of the day.
This confusion was amplified by a few other events going on her life. First, there was the news that she could be pregnant, which seems to not be the case. However, not telling Matty about it proved to be a terrible decision (especially when Jake ended up being the one to break the news to him), and he adopted an ultimate “YOLO” lifestyle after finding out the night’s other big shocker: Ricky was dead. While everyone attempted to make a big deal out of this at first, it instead really just turned into a hilarious exchange about just how many people really hated the guy.
The major thing that we can say about “Awkward” is that even though we care about the characters and there are some genuine emotional moments, it manages to do this and also be funny. Save for maybe “Girls” and “Parks and Recreation,” are there really any other comedies on TV that do this week after week without diving into cynicism.
