‘Mad Men’ season 6, episode 3 preview: Jessica Pare teases Megan’s situation
While Don Draper on “Mad Men” is clearly suffering thanks to a product of his own doing, no one is more blissfully unaware right now than his wife Megan. The storyline that plays out here between the two is proving to be much more complicated than it was last year: Jon Hamm’s character has already found himself a new mistress, and Megan is so caught up within her own ideal that she fails to notice that anything is wrong.
So does Megan have on blinders to the truth in her marriage? Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the subject, Jessica Pare claims that some of her character’s naivete in the first few episodes of the season (including tonight’s) may stem from the cockiness that she feels thanks to her new career path:
“Things were moving a little bit for her when her husband made this amazing sacrifice so that she could have something she wanted … I think she feels she’s got it all, which is always a worrisome position for someone to be in.”
Pare says that Megan wants to be a good wife to Don, and is at times even consumed by it; however, she is a challenging woman for him in that she does want something more than that, as well. This reckless ambition and fierce independence makes her different than Betty in some ways, and for a man still searching for a real identity, having a woman around who is such an unknown variable may be frustrating at times.
Regardless of whatever happens between Don and Megan, don’t expect things to blow up all at once. Knowing Mr. Draper, this is going to become much worse before it becomes better.
