‘Happy Endings’ season 3: Series boss responds to ABC’s ‘save show’ promo
On Friday, “Happy Endings” is returning to ABC for the first time in a little while with new episodes, and ABC has taken some pretty interesting steps in order to get the word out. You may have seen already the promo that blatantly says that viewers can “save” the show by checking out the new episodes, which is a pretty rare acknowledgment that the show is on thin ice and needs support in order to be renewed. Then again, we’ve already heard that ABC loves the show and would love for it to continue, but it does need to see a better performance out of it in order for that to happen.
So what does the show’s boss think about this campaign? The network creates the commercial campaigns, but consecutive producer David Caspe sounds as though he is open in them trying anything that could help bring some more support to the series:
“You got to hand it to them … That’s the most press that a promo has ever gotten that I’ve seen in my lifetime. … It’s quite effective. It might seem a little odd, but it’s kind of working.”
So can you choose to look at the “save the show” campaign a little more cynically? Sure, since the network can easily come out and say now that they literally did everything they can to keep it alive following a cancellation, and not have to worry so much about fan backlash. However, we do really believe that they would love to see “Happy Endings” stick around, and they would be getting blood on their hands either way.
Just remember: if you are a fan of the show, either watch live or pick a mode to watch it that can be counted or monetized in some way.
