‘Psych’ season 7, episode 3 review: The Big Show and Bigfoot

“Psych” has went to some fairly interesting places over the past several seasons, but somehow, they managed to take on some subject matter that would make Dev Patel’s character from “The Newsroom” rather happy this week: the legend of Bigfoot. There was so much potential here, and that was amplified by the creative choice of making this the “Cloverfield” of “Psych” episodes courtesy of handheld cameras.

In looking back at the hour, though, we can’t say it was our favorite episode. As a matter of fact, it may be our least favorite episode since that Christmas special with Gus’ family. We just found the student filmmakers annoying, and the entire mystery of the episode felt like it never really went anywhere. The villains at the end were random, so it didn’t feel so much as we were resolving much of a mystery. We already assumed that Bigfoot did not exist, but having the mob involved was almost as crazy.

However, we don’t want to look like we are railing completely over this episode. Lassiter clearly had some of the best moments as he freaked out and nearly bled himself to death, and WWE superstar The Big Show actually felt very natural in his role as a hermit with a jaded past. We almost wish he was in it more, and the students less.

At the end of the day, the biggest issues we had with the hour were not necessarily horrible things, but it kept it from being an hour we’d want to watch again.

1. After finding out that Shawn and Juliet were going to finally move in together, wouldn’t it have been nice to dive into that? After thinking of all of these comedic possibilities, going straight into Bigfoot almost felt like a letdown.

2. We’re ultimately just not big fans of these handheld-video episodes. “Supernatural” tried something similar in the fall, and it may have been one of the show’s weakest episodes in years.
