This Is Us season 4 episode 9: Are Kate and Toby getting divorced?

Tonight on This Is Us season 4 episode 9, the NBC series managed to fake us out completely all over again. Also, it managed to make us cry over the state of Kate and Toby Pearson.

In the closing minutes of tonight’s new episode, we saw the series flash forward slightly to the Big Three’s 40th birthday party. While there, we learned at least one bit of good news in that Kevin Pearson is seemingly engaged — and his fiancée is also pregnant! Isn’t that wonderful? Well, it also has to be mentioned that Kate seems to be not with Toby anymore. She signs the police form “Kate Pearson” after the police dropped off Rebecca and we know from the longer flash-forward that Toby arrived to see Rebecca alone. There is no evidence that the two are together anymore.

Yet, there is one more thing to remember and recall here — very little in the world of This Is Us moves in a straight line. Even though it seems as though Kate and Toby are in a rough patch coming up, that doesn’t mean that the two of them are going to be apart forever.

As for another big mystery at the moment, we learned from the birthday party that Kevin and Randall are no longer talking — but there isn’t any sort of explanation as to why. Given how close the two have been at times, this is a curious development. They’ve been through their issues before, in particular when Kevin’s drinking got in the way of Randall’s family. Yet, there’s something about this that feels a little bit different.

One more thing that is worth noting — Nicky is more of a part of the family than ever! After all, his shrimp tradition at Thanksgiving has now been adopted by the adult version of Baby Jack.
