According to a report coming in from TV Insider, you will see Hirsch appearing on the upcoming 11th episode of this season as Abe, described as a “Holocaust survivor trying to solve a mystery from his past.” Knowing this show, it’s not some out-of-left-field guess that this mystery is going to be tied in some way to the God Account and a Friend Suggestion. Despite his heartbreaking experiences, Abe’s “humorous and hopeful outlook will have an indelible impact on Miles.” Does that mean he’ll be a character whose impact is felt for longer than a single episode? We kinda hope so, since one of the biggest critiques one can make about God Friended Me is that it jumps so fast from one suggestion to the next that you miss all of the various light and shade in between.
Hirsch has a notable recent history on CBS — while Taxi aired on ABC, he has appeared as Leonard’s father in multiple episodes of The Big Bang Theory to go along with the sitcom Superior Donuts. This is the sort of guest-casting we wish we saw on God Friended Me with regularity — known names who may be able to attract other great guest stars to the show. Even if they are some names you haven’t seen on TV in a while. One of the largest struggles that this show has is the fact that it has to market itself on the premise, and not so much on any of its regulars. While we very much enjoy Brandon Michael Hall and Violett Beane, neither one of them were household names to the CBS audience prior to this show starting.
What we’re trying to say here is rather simple — the more popular talent you can assemble for God Friended Me, the better off the ratings will most likely be.
