Watchmen premiere ratings gets off to solid start on HBO
Overall, the network claims that 1.5 million viewers caught the show across its various platforms on Sunday night. According to Variety, the digital numbers make it the most-watched series premiere that HBO has had since the kick-off to Westworld back in 2016. It’s hard to judge Watchmen in particular based solely on one airing, especially since HBO shows tend to catch on and improve over the course of a season. They’re banking on quality, and allow word-of-mouth to be as good of a source of promotion as anything that they do themselves.

Of course, it’s still obvious that HBO has a long road ahead of it in its quest to try and find a way to live up to the legacy of Game of Thrones — so far, the ratings of all of their other shows can’t even hold a candle to it. Just in live ratings alone (not including digital views), the final season of the George R.R. Martin adaptation ended up averaging almost 12 million viewers. That’s crazy, and more than the bulk of HBO’s other shows combined.
The biggest selling point for Watchmen moving forward is going to just be the source material, the strength of Regina King as a performer, and the stability that Damon Lindelof brings as an executive producer. He was fantastic with The Leftovers, and while there may be plenty of people out there who hated the ending of lost, he was still able to cultivate it for many years still.
