Prodigal Son snags full-season order at Fox after four episodes
The news came out early today, and the overall episode total is an impressive one — think in terms of 22 episodes overall. This is on par with a number that many other fall TV series have received over the years. We do know that some shows out there in the present day are gravitating more towards shorter orders, but that is clearly not something that is happening here with this series.
What we’ve got at the moment with Prodigal Son is a show that, by and large, is posting some impressive early live ratings. To go along with that, though, it’s also doing a nice job in some other measurements. This in terms of DVR ratings, and we don’t think it’s any coincidence that Fox is making this announcement when they are. They clearly feel like they’ve seen enough in order to ensure that this is the first series this year to get that sort of push. They’re more than happy with it, and this allows the writers and producers to now take their time in order to formulate the best possible story out there.
As for what other new fall series could find themselves lucky enough to get a full order, let’s just say that some of these networks are, more than likely, going to take a little more time in order to figure this out. We don’t get a good sense that anyone else is hurrying along a decision one way or another on the future of their shows, especially since so many of them premiered to more or less average ratings. Think, for example, about Stumptown, a show that did get a ton of promotion from ABC leading into it.
With 22 episodes, be prepared to see Prodigal Son stick around on the air well until we get into the spring — it could even last as far as May, depending on whatever scheduling strategy Fox chooses to employ here.
