Songland video: JT Roach sings ‘Somebody to Love’ for OneRepublic
Will JT Roach be the songwriter that wins them over? In the sneak peek that CarterMatt has for you below, you do get a sense of some of what he has to offer! The moment that he starts to sing his track “Somebody to Love,” you immediately get the sense that this could be a OneRepublic song. It’s got that emotion behind it, the pain, the longing, and great writing carrying it through the chorus. The one thing that may need changing is just the title of the song itself — the moment that we hear this, we cannot help but have a part of our mind go immediately over to Queen. That’s one of those songs that is SO iconic that it’s hard to dissociate it from its title.

One thing that’s kind-of-shocking to hear from Tedder in this sneak peek is that OneRepublic hasn’t done an original single about heartache since “Apologize” — one of the band’s earliest hits! When you think about “I Live,” “Counting Stars,” “Good Life,” “Secrets” and many of their other hits, they don’t focus on this topic. That does help to make this new track stand out a little bit. It doesn’t feel like a song you’ve heard before and that is something that could work in JT Roach’s favor.
Of course, rest assured there will be plenty other competition tonight as we get a chance to see who OneRepublic wants to go with insofar as song choice goes. We’ll have more coverage all about it tonight so stay tuned!
