Gossip Girl reboot is coming to HBO Max streaming service
Today, HBO Max ordered ten hour-long episodes of a new version of the iconic CW series. Is this going to be a full-on remake of the classic series? Not entirely, given that the series seems to be looking at the impact that social media has on the world since the original series. We don’t think that we’re going to be seeing new versions of Serena and Blair … but we also don’t anticipate this show bringing back Blake Lively and Leighton Meester with regularity, either. The plan seems to be bringing on board new young actors to the world of Gossip Girl and see how they react to being the subject of so much attention.
When the original series aired for many years, it ended up being a publicity sensation for the network. It made stars of its original cast and there was a time when its content was deemed as controversial and salacious. By modern-day standards, it almost feels a little more tame. HBO Max will have to up the ante when it comes to material and, on the other side of that, also find a way to give you twists and turns that you didn’t see on the original.
If you haven’t heard just yet, HBO Max is the long-discussed WarnerMedia streaming service, and the plan here is for them to release this alongside all of HBO’s programming. When you think about the total cost of HBO NOW as it is, this service could be seen as a bargain. Yet, if you don’t have HBO and you want to watch the new version of Gossip Girl, the service could be seen as rather pricey. This service is going to be bringing you all episodes of shows like Friends and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air — beyond that, it will give you some original series including ones set in the Gremlins and Dune universe. This is one of the service’s first attempts to try and snag young female viewers, the sort who both watched Gossip Girl when it was on or wanted to but weren’t quite old enough.
At the moment, we would expect this new version of Gossip Girl to premiere either in 2020 or early 2021. Hopefully we’ll have some other casting news over the course of the next few months.
