How to Get Away with Murder season 6 to be final season
In a statement today, ABC confirmed that they are saying farewell to the Viola Davis drama during the 2019-20 season, a decision that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone. We are talking here about a show with a devoted following, but also one with progressively lower ratings the past few years. Davis is also extremely in-demand for movie projects and with this show ending, she has an opportunity now to focus more on film/any other roles that want to come her way.
There were rumors about season 6 being the final season months ago so with that, executive producer Pete Nowalk and the writers have assumed that this was a possibility for some time. In a statement, Nowalk had the following to say:
“Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do — as it did here … For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom. I am so thankful to the brilliant cast, writers and crew for dedicating themselves to the most rewarding experience of my career over the last six years. I also want to thank our fans. The only reason this show exists is because of your loyalty and enthusiasm. I can’t wait for you all to see how it ends, with twists and turns and all the craziness we love to create every Thursday night. Buckle up.”
With How to Get Away with Murder ending, it does close to the door on another chapter of the Shonda Rhimes era at ABC. With For the People canceled, Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 are now the only two Shondaland series still running at the network. Shonda now has a deal over at Netflix, so any new creations of hers are going to come to fruition over there.
