Big Little Lies season 3: Are the current ratings a sign of optimism?
What we can say is this — when it comes to the ratings for Big Little Lies season 2 alone, there is reason for tremendous confidence in the series’ overall future. To date, the episodes are drawing in 1.5 million live viewers alone weekly, and that’s an improve of more than 28% from the season 1 average. That’s an incredible improvement and it’s without even taking into consideration the fact that Big Little Lies is one of the most-watched shows via streaming and DVR viewership on cable. The majority of its weekly audience is not even checking it out live.
Based on the numbers, and based on HBO having a Westeros-sized hole in their schedule with Game of Thrones gone (and no guarantee a spin-off will deliver), they have to consider some other options. Doing more Big Little Lies is one of the best possible options that they could come across, though granted, there are steps needed to ensure you make it happen.
For starters, that means getting Liane Moriarty involved in order to craft the right story. Her involvement in the story of season 2 made it easier for it to happen. On the other side of that, you can then speak with the cast and gauge their own availability. Because we’re talking about people in Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley, these are people with enormous careers and other projects constantly in the works. They may also be pricey, but we don’t think that cost is much of an issue with a show this successful.
HBO should jump on more Big Little Lies — or, at the very least, make it clear that they are game to do more once another idea is formally out there. We’re now just in the process of waiting to see if something comes about.
