One Day at a Time season 4 is happening! Canceled series moves to Pop
The improbable has now come true — there will be a One Day at a Time season 4 following Netflix’s oh-so-depressing cancellation.
Today, Pop confirmed that they are going to be picking up the brilliant comedy remake of the classic CBS show, and in doing so, making television history. One Day at a Time becomes the first show ever to be saved on cable after originally airing on a streaming service. This will be a transition, most likely, for everyone involved (including viewers), but it’s a worthwhile one. The only other outcome here would have been not getting more One Day at a Time at all.
As a part of this deal, CBS will eventually also broadcast the fourth season following its run on Pop — giving the show another layer of exposure and an added opportunity for viewership.
For Pop, the move is well worth the risk. This is a cable network that is still a virtual unknown to many people out there, and it will bring them exposure — both in terms of One Day at a Time and some of their other programming. For studio Sony, this allows them to have pulled off the unthinkable. (In between this move and what they were able to do with Timeless, Sony deserves a TON of credit for the commitment that they have to their shows.
In a statement today rejoicing the pickup, here is some of what executive producer Norman Lear had to say on the subject:
“Three months ago, I was heartbroken with the news of our beloved One Day At A Time‘s cancellation. Today, I’m overwhelmed with joy to know the Alvarez family will live on … Thank you to my producing partner, Brent Miller, our incredibly talented co-showrunners, Mike Royce and Gloria Calderón Kellett, and of course, Sony, for never once giving up on the show, our actors or the possibility that a cable network could finally save a cancelled series that originated on a streaming service. And one last thank you to, Pop, for having the guts to be that first cable network. Even this I get to experience – at 96.”
Meanwhile, executive producers Mike Royce and Gloria Calderón Kellett added the following:
“Added Royce and Calderón Kellett, “We are thrilled beyond belief to be making more One Day At A Time. This show has meant so much to so many, and we can’t wait to dive in with our amazing new partners Pop and CBS. And we’d especially like to thank all of the fans for their undying support, helping us turn #SaveODAAT into #MoreODAAT.”
Season 4 of One Day at a Time is going to premiere in 2020.
