Before talking specifics, remember that these numbers are the live ratings from Freeform last night — they don’t include international viewings, DVR ratings, and some streaming information out there. We make this clear just so that you’re aware of how small a sample this is. It’s mostly a litmus test, devised from an archaic Nielsen ratings system used to measure live ratings for advertisers. It’s still important, though — it’s a big enough sample to let us know proportionally, what the enthusiasm around Shadowhunters is.
The overall numbers – Monday’s episode posted a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic (virtually even with all other recent episodes this season) and close to 310,000 viewers. In total eyeballs watching, this is a drop of about 10% from last week’s episode — it’s not the least-watched episode of 2019, but it’s close to that. (Episode 12 drew around 307,000 people.) So why so much ebb and flow one week to the next? It’s honestly just a function of natural viewing habits — it’s not some indication that viewers are tired of watching Shadowhunters in any way, but more and more people are opting for some other means of checking it out. The idea of watching commercials for many seems to be a trend that is so several years ago. In a world where there are so many other options, what’s the preference for watching live?
The silver lining – It remains the same as it’s been — without necessarily a lot of cross-network promotion this show continues to keep most of its 18-49 audience. It’s also still generating a ton of social impressions and has an army of extremely-satisfied fans.

It’s really not altogether complicated — Shadowhunters and its value are measured mostly through its broad appeal. It’s not a 1996 show and really cannot be measured as such. Its audience is global and it needs proper distribution there, plus also a dedicated channel in America where viewers have the opportunity to watch it live or, if they choose, after the fact easily. The complicated financial structure of Shadowhunters is one of the reasons why Freeform canceled it in the first place, and we do think that rights, licensing, and making sure all broadcast/streaming partners are in agreement is going to be the key to the future for all sorts of shows.
If this is the end for Shadowhunters this year, at least fans can take some solace in that their passion is producing some stability — even in spite of tough competition like American Idol and The Voice.
