The Voice video: Watch Kim Cherry’s audition to ‘No Scrubs’
This, dear friends, is what we call a botched opportunity. What’s with the thumbnail, NBC? The audition, visually, is set up like Jordan Smith’s from seasons ago — the show lets you see things from, more or less, the perspective of the coaches. You don’t see what Kim Cherry is doing having a good time onstage until Kelly Clarkson turns her chair around in the interlude. It’s at that point you realize that Kim looks the way that she looks … so NBC totally undercuts themselves by giving the game away unless you just stumble upon the video without seeing the image first.

We don’t really care about the stunt of the thumbnail all that much anyway. This is not a show about the element of surprise; it is a show about how good you are as an artist. Here’s the thing with Kim: She’s got some vocal ability, but she may actually be a better rapper than a singer. There’s a rhythm within that part of the performance that feels impressive. You can sense her passion and ferocity. The issue she stumbles into is coming across like a possible one-hit The Voice wonder. Do you have the power here when the element of surprise is gone? This is an audition that works well for the game of the blind auditions but in the main portion of the show, we’re not so sure what the staying power here really is.
One thing we know for sure
Kim Cherry’s got guts — serious guts. It takes a lot of oomph and self-belief to come out and tear up the stage like this with your first audition, especially when you know you don’t look anything like you’re going to sound. We give her credit, and she’s got a choice between Kelly and Blake Shelton, who is probably the most random person to ever turn for a performance of “No Scrubs.” We do almost want to see what he’d do with her as a coach … but she’ll probably pick Kelly. It’s the sensible pick given what we know about her musical diversity and sense of confidence.
The last thing we’ll say before signing off is rather simple: Stay tuned! You’re going to be able to get some more takes on other performances from The Voice over at the link here, all season long. You aren’t going to want to miss those!
