At this point, it’s probably clear to most that the network has a somewhat checkered history when it comes to trying to establish new properties within the world of the show. Supernatural: Bloodlines ended up basically being a less-good version of The Originals, and was a pretty big disappointment from the first few minutes of the backdoor pilot on. Meanwhile, Wayward Sisters actually had potential — it is one of the few backdoor pilots out there that viewers are still upset about almost a good year removed from the decision to not pick it up. That show seemed to have a lot of what The CW wants in this current era of TV, but the network went instead with Legacies. That choice has worked out okay for them (Legacies was renewed for a second season), but it doesn’t make us any left sad.
For now, Mark Pedowitz is taking a more cautious approach with more projects within the Supernatural world. Just take a look at some of what he had to say, per Deadline, on the subject:
“I’ll say it again, if there was a spinoff to be had, I’d love to have it … That said, I’ve come to somewhat of a conclusion that the show is the two brothers.”
We don’t think there will be another attempt at a spin-off for a bit. The most likely scenario here is that we see the writers look at doing something more following the flagship show itself — provided that it does actually end at some point! We could see them wanting to keep the Supernatural brand alive after Sam and Dean, but there may not be all that much of a hurry to do anything leading up to that point when they already have a show that is delivering the goods for them in the first place.
At least for now, we can rejoice in the fact that Supernatural was renewed for a season 15, and that will premiere during the 2019-2020 season.
