On tonight’s episode, Caelynn will open up to Colton about a sexual assault that took place when she was in college — it’s the first time that The Bachelor will have ever taken on this sort of serious subject matter on the show, and you can see that they wanted to handle this subject with an especially deft touch. This is why they decided to not heavily promote the conversation in advance. The only thing that was done in advance was an interview featuring Caelynn in People Magazine, where she explained why she wanted to tell Colton about it:
“As soon as I met Colton, there was this immediate connection and safeness that he created. I truly have never felt so safe and so comfortable in a relationship … I knew that if it progressed and if my feelings continued to progress, it’s something that he would need to know about. It’s an important part of a relationship. He is such a genuine loving and kind person, and I felt that. And that’s why I was able to open up in that way. I was really grateful how he handled it.”
Miller-Keyes had previously spoken about the incident around the Miss USA Pageant, as she tried to raise awareness for sexual assault survivors and those who have been forgotten at times by the legal system. The Bachelor is obviously a silly dating show at its core, but it also an opportunity to take on larger issues and raise awareness. It’s not often that you see contestants try to use the show to make the world better while speaking from the heart. With that in mind, Caelynn has our respect for putting herself out there in this capacity. We cannot imagine it being an easy thing to do.
