Simon Cowell gives Kechi Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent: The Champions

Tonight, Simon Cowell had the power on America’s Got Talent: The Champions to choose whoever he wanted with the Golden Buzzer. We know that the music mogul has a tendency to give the buzzer to singers, but there’s certainly no hard-and-fast rule that he has to! We’ve seen him go in some other directions with it before, and we certainly thought he could do the same thing again coming into tonight. It would just all depend on what act he found the most pleasing within the moment.

In the end, though, Simon Cowell did end up choosing Kechi as his Golden Buzzer choice! Ironically, he gave it to her doing a song from Calum Scott, who he gave a Golden Buzzer to on Britain’s Got Talent years ago. (Side note — why is Calum not on this competition? He is actually a successful recording artist at the moment, but still.)

Simon made it clear that he’s been waiting to give Kechi a Golden Buzzer for a long time and regretted not doing it on her first season of the show, and maybe that played into his final decision here. We do think that the competition is singer-heavy at the moment, but it’s hard to not be moved by Kechi’s emotional story and also the way in which she conveys her story through song. She’s actually improved tremendously since the last time that she was on the show and that’s something that is certainly worth celebrating.

Do we think that Kechi can win the final? We do think that she’s facing an uphill battle due to the high number of singers who are around, but we certainly not ruling things out. It’s going to depend in part on her song choice, and also what some of her competitors do. It’s also up to the super-fans and what they decide … which is such a strange format that it’s rather hard to digest and think about.
