The Conners season 1 finale spoilers: Sara Gilbert teases surprise guest

Tonight, The Connersseason 1finale is set to air on ABC and there are a few different things we’ve come to know about it … including that there’s going to be some sort of big guest star. ABC is touting a surprise in this episode, but they haven’t given too many hints as to who it is … other than that it could be Johnny Galecki. Given the fact that David is still tied to Darlene’s story, it makes some sense that he would turn up now, especially with her making a big decision when it comes to the future.

Of course, Gilbert wasn’t altogether interested in sharing too many details for what lies ahead … but she did say the following about David and Darlene’s relationship to TVLine:

“I think David and Darlene are so tied to each other emotionally that they keep coming into each others’ lives. I don’t think either one of them can easily step away from each other.”

As for the chances of a season 2 for The Conners, Gilbert is certainly optimistic that there will be a chance to see it. That’s probably even more important when you consider that there’s going to be, per Gilbert, some sort of cliffhanger at the end of the episode. There’s also going to be a feeling of everything coming full-circle, which makes sense given the life-changing events of the premiere:

“Some of the emotions of the premiere come up again in this episode … That’s something that was really important to me. I didn’t want to do a sitcom version of loss where there’s one “very special episode” and then it’s done and everybody moves on. This episode shows that emotional themes run through people’s lives and not just through a week.”

If you’ve enjoyed the great run that we’ve had with The Conners so far this season, there’s a pretty-good chance that you’re also going to love this. It marks a great opportunity for closure and, beyond just that, it’s an opportunity to have another slice of comedy before sending this show off into the sunset for now. Let’s just cross our fingers now and hope that this episode ends up delivering what we expect.

Of course, let’s also hope that there is going to be a season 2 on the other side.
