Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen episode 8: Did Brandon or Pablo advance?

Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen episode 8 showed itself to be one of the grosser editions of the online cooking competition — there’s really no other way to explain it when you’re thinking about what the two chefs were up against. Pablo Lamon was greeted by Brandon Rosen following his elimination from the show itself, and while here, he had a chance to get some redemption for a dish that was slammed as being too “slimy” on the main portion of the competition.

In this episode, Pablo and Brandon were basically forced to come up with dishes that had to highlight a number of super-slimy foods, in particular ones that Tom Colicchio hates. Not the easiest challenge in the world, especially since okra was one of them. These guys had to find a way to get some of the sliminess out of them, and there were some pretty interesting ways in which they did that. Brandon went in a particularly Asian direction, finding a way to create a really interesting and flavorful noodle dish that appealed to the senses. Meanwhile, Pablo actually went for the okra, and tried to rectify its sliminess by going in a tempura direction while also serving a shaved form of jellyfish in order to change both the texture and the saltiness of the product.

We gotta say, we love challenges like this because it’s challenging the chefs to take something largely unappealing and find a way to make it tasty — and it actually feels like both of them did a really good job with this. We do think that these dishes were praised more than a good 80% of the beef dishes on this past episode of the show itself, and we think that creativity had a heck of a lot to do with that.

The winner in the end was Brandon, and he has a chance now to go on a new streak in this kitchen. The show’s in an interesting spot now following Brother Luck’s decision to depart — they have a lot of other chefs that can work their way into the kitchen and see if there’s a way in which for them to succeed here.  Someone could step up here and find a way to shine — and in doing so, become somewhat of a Top Chef legend. There’s a real change to make something great of yourself in terms of being a TV personality alone from Last Chance Kitchen — there’s so few contestants that it enables you a chance to dominate much of the spotlight.
