The person who is steering the ship this time around is Neal Bear, who confirmed on Twitter (not that it should be any surprise) that season 3 will be coming your way at some point this year. Kiefer Sutherland is back as President Tom Kirkman, and he’s not alone — many familiar faces from the first two seasons will be returning, and to go along with that, we’re also going to have a chance to see some newcomers to the show including Anthony Edwards. Baer has a history working with him on ER, and we think in general Neal’s experience will help the show greatly. He’s taken on a number of different genres, with some of his best work coming in our mind from Law & Order: SVU.
So what do we actually expect in terms of the season 3 story? We do think that the writers and producers are going to take advantage of the Netflix medium to tell a story that is a little more serialized in nature, and addictive to the point where you want to watch all of the episodes in rapid succession. Beyond that, we’re also hoping for some subject matter that is a little bit edgier and super-contemporary. While we don’t expect Designated Survivor to reinforce one particular political ideology, we are hoping that it continues to take bold, interesting risks as it tries to showcase a wide array of interesting content and ideas. We want it to be topical, and we want its viewers to have conversations after the fact. After all, it needs to have some discussions spread via word-of-mouth given that this is the way in which more viewers will be talking about it a little bit after the fact.
At the moment, our feeling is that Designated Survivor season 3 could be ready by the time we get around to the summer. Yet, we don’t think that this is something that should necessarily be rushed, either. When post-production can be wrapped up and Netflix can have together a reasonable campaign to promote the show, that’s when we are ready to get Kirkman and everyone else back with some more stories.
